The IOF visits Bac Orchids

Last month, the Institute of Flowers had the pleasure of visiting Bac Orchids in Moerkapelle, Netherlands. We were warmly welcomed by brothers Dico and Gert-Jan Bac, who generously showed us around their impressive 5.6-hectare operation specialising in large-flowered cut cymbidium orchids.

Sustainable Growing Practices

Bacorchids

What stood out most during our visit was Bac Orchids' commitment to sustainable growing methods. They use chemical-free insect control throughout their greenhouses and maintain careful monitoring of humidity levels to create perfect growing conditions for their stunning orchids.

We were particularly impressed by their use of PhormiTex Lumina 40, a diffuse fire-retardant shading screen that not only improves light quality for the plants but also contributes to better energy efficiency across their facilities.

Attention to Detail

The brothers shared with us that they dedicate 60% of their growing time to ensuring straight stems - something that makes a world of difference to florists like us! This level of care and attention to detail shows in the exceptional quality of their cymbidium orchids, which come in a wonderful variety of colours and sizes.

A Heartfelt Thank You

The Institute of Flowers would like to extend our sincere thanks to Bac Orchids for their outstanding hospitality during our visit. The knowledge and passion that Dico and Gert-Jan shared with us was truly inspiring.

If you'd like to see more of their beautiful orchids and growing process, you can follow them on Instagram at @bacorchids, where they regularly share updates about their operations.

We look forward to incorporating these magnificent cymbidiums into our future floral designs and hope to visit their Herenweg facilities again soon!
