Qualifications in Floristry

Floristry is a recognised professional craft โ€” blending creativity, design, floriculture and horticultural knowledge.
The Institute of Flowers (IOF) is committed to raising standards across the Irish floristry industry by aligning with the FLORINT Education Framework, the official European standard for professional florist qualifications established by the World Association of Florists (FLORINT).

This alignment ensures Irish florists can pursue qualifications recognised across Europe, supporting mobility, professionalism, and excellence within our industry.

๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ช Irish Qualifications

QQI (FETAC) Level 5 โ€“ Certificate in Floristry
The foundation qualification for florists in Ireland, providing essential training in design principles, plant knowledge, and retail floristry practice.
It includes the study of nomenclature (the botanical naming of flowers and plants) and floriculture (the cultivation and care of cut flowers and plants), both key requirements of professional floristry.

  • Ideal for: Beginners or those seeking formal entry into the profession

  • Delivered through: Further Education Colleges and ETBโ€™s across Ireland

  • Level: Equivalent to one year of full-time study

๐Ÿ’ Bench Training

Not all florists begin their careers in a classroom.
Bench training is the traditional, hands-on route into floristry, learning directly in a flower shop under the guidance of an experienced florist.
This approach develops speed, confidence, practical design skills, and product knowledge through daily interaction with fresh flowers and plants.

The IOF recognises bench-trained florists as an integral part of Irelandโ€™s floristry heritage and is developing pathways to formally acknowledge this experience within national and European certification structures.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง City & Guilds Qualifications

City & Guilds offers a clear, structured route from beginner to master florist, recognised across Ireland, the UK, and internationally.

  • Level 2 โ€“ Diploma in Floristry
Core floristry techniques, design basics, and introduction to plant nomenclature.

  • Level 3 โ€“ Advanced Diploma in Floristry
Expands technical, creative, and business skills, including elements of floriculture and botanical study.

  • Level 4 โ€“ Higher Diploma in Floristry
Focuses on advanced creative design, innovation, and conceptual development.

  • Level 5 โ€“ Master Diploma in Professional Floristry
The highest City & Guilds qualification โ€” earning the title Master Florist.

๐ŸŒ European & International Qualifications

FLORINT Education Framework
FLORINT, the World Association of Florists, has developed a harmonised European standard for professional florist training.
These qualifications define the creative, technical, and scientific competencies required within the floral industry โ€” including nomenclature, floriculture, design theory, and business acumen โ€” across all levels from foundation to master florist.
The IOFโ€™s goal is to align fully with this framework, enabling Irish florists to train, compete, and work confidently across Europe.

EMC โ€“ European Master Certification
An independent, internationally respected qualification for professional florists seeking to advance their design thinking and creative process.

  • Structure: Foundation, Practicum, and Advanced modules

  • Focus: European design principles, creativity, and personal development

  • Title: European Master Florist (EMC)

IMF โ€“ International Master Florist
A highly advanced programme for experienced designers demonstrating mastery, innovation, and leadership in global floral design.

NCDF โ€“ National Certificate in Design Floristry (USA)
Recognised within the U.S. as a professional design qualification through formal study.

AIFD โ€“ American Institute of Floral Designers
A prestigious international accreditation awarded to florists who demonstrate exceptional artistry and professionalism.

๐ŸŒฟ Recognition of Prior Learning

The IOF values all routes into floristry โ€” from bench training to formal education.
Whether your experience comes from QQI, City & Guilds, FLORINT, EMC, IMF, NCDF, or AIFD, your skills and contribution to the profession are recognised within our growing community of Irish florists.

๐ŸŽ“ Continued Professional Development (CPD)

Floristry is a constantly evolving industry, with trends, sustainability, and technology shaping how we work.
Continued Professional Development (CPD) is vital for every florist who wants to grow, stay inspired, and maintain excellence in both creative and business practice.

The IOF actively supports CPD through:

  • Masterclasses and workshops held throughout the year with leading Irish and international designers, ensuring continued development in areas such as nomenclature, floriculture, and sustainable design.

  • Business and leadership training in partnership with Positive2Work Skillnet, helping florists strengthen their digital, financial, and management skills.

  • Ongoing mentorship and peer learning within the IOF network, creating a culture of lifelong learning and professional growth.
