The Future of Irish Floristry Starts with Better Education

At the Institute of Flowers, we believe every florist deserves the chance to grow their skills to the highest level – no matter where they start their journey.

But right now in Ireland, that path simply doesn’t exist.

The current education system offers only a basic level course. After that, florists are largely left to figure things out on their own. In contrast, our European counterparts benefit from strong professional training, ongoing development, and multiple qualification pathways that bring their skill to world-class levels.

Ireland is bursting with talent – but we are not getting the same opportunities. And that needs to change.

Skill isn’t something you download.

There are hundreds of online flower schools out there, and while they may suit hobbyists or those dipping their toe into floristry, they are not a substitute for real education. They cannot replace what you learn from handling flowers every day, from being mentored, from working with your hands and your heart.

Floristry is physical, emotional, and technical. Every flower behaves differently. Every design requires structure, mechanics, sourcing, costing – and all of it needs to be learned by doing.

Online schools that encourage people to start businesses without any practical training are doing a disservice to both the industry and the individuals. Without the knowledge to survive in an already saturated market, many new florists burn out – not from lack of passion, but from lack of skill and support.

There’s an entire education in buying

flowers alone.

How to source, when to buy, how to condition, where to invest and where to hold back – this knowledge can’t be gained through watching a screen. It’s learnt through doing, day after day, with guidance and repetition.

This is why the IOF is working tirelessly in the background to create something better.

We’re building a system where florists in Ireland can finally access:

  • Meaningful qualifications beyond the basics

  • Practical, hands-on workshops with master florists

  • Industry-led mentorship and skill progression

  • Certification that reflects international standards

Our mission is clear: to professionalise floristry in Ireland and support every florist – from beginner to master – to achieve their potential.

We believe floristry is a skilled trade, an art form, and a career worth investing in.

And we believe Ireland deserves better.

🌸 Support the movement. Be part of the change.

Join the IOF as we advocate for better education, more opportunity, and real recognition for florists in Ireland.

Together, we can build an industry that lifts everyone.
